ABCDuane Book Signing with Duane MichalsNovember 7, 2014: 6 - 8 PM
Join us at DC Moore Gallery for a book signing of Duane Michals'
ABCDuane, in which he wends through his own creative and biographical narrative, careening through the ideas, artists, and themes that obsess him. Inspired by the work of such painters as Magritte, de Chirico, and Balthus - all of whom he has met, photographed, and collected - Michals addresses literary and philosophical ideas about death, gender, and sexuality.
This book is heavily illustrated not only with Michals' own works - including rarely seen and never-before-published portraits, painted tintypes, and color pieces - but also with pieces from his private art collection, donated to Carnegie Museum of Art. Whether a portrait of Eugène Atget by Berenice Abbott, a collage by Joseph Cornell, or an etching by Hockney, the works of these masters sit side by side with Michals' inspired images, further revealing the artist's creative process.
ABCDuane is the perfect primer and creative autobiography of this beloved artist.
This fall, Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, the hometown of Duane Michals, celebrates his extraordinary career with a major retrospective,
Storyteller: The Photographs of Duane Michals (November 1, 2014 - February 16, 2015). Works from Michals' collection included in
ABCDuane will be shown as part of the concurrent exhibition,
Duane MIchals: Collector (November 1, 2014 - March 2, 2015).
The hardcover
ABCDuane: A Duane Michals Primer will be available for $40 at the event, and light refreshments will be served.
