On May 13, a Zoom webinar brings together Jenelle Porter and Robert Kushner to discuss Kushner's exhibition, Robert Kushner: I ❤ Matisse, on view at DC Moore Gallery through June 19.
Jenelle Porter is a curator and writer. She has organized a range of major exhibitions including Less Is a Bore: Maximalist Art & Design, Mike Kelley: Timeless Painting, Fiber: Sculpture 1960–present, Dance with Camera, and Dirt on Delight: Impulses That Form Clay, as well as monographic exhibitions of Trisha Donnelly, Jeffrey Gibson, Charline von Heyl, Christina Ramberg, Kay Sekimachi, and Arlene Shechet, among many others. During her two-decade museum career she was Senior Curator at Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, Curator at Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, and at Artists Space, New York, a fellow at Walker Art Center and curatorial assistant at Whitney Museum of American Art. Porter is the author of numerous books and essays on art and artists.
Robert Kushner, since participating in the early years of the Pattern and Decoration Movement in the 1970s, has continued to address controversial issues involving decoration. Kushner draws from a unique range of influences, including Islamic and European textiles, Henri Matisse, Georgia O’Keeffe, Charles Demuth, Pierre Bonnard, Tawaraya Sotatsu, Ito Jakuchu, Qi Baishi, and Wu Changshuo. Kushner has exhibited extensively in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Recent museum exhibitions featuring Kushner’s work include, With Pleasure: Pattern and Decoration in American Art 1972-1985, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA (2019). This exhibition will be on view in 2021 at the Hessel Museum of Art, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY; Less is a Bore: Maximalist Art & Design, Institute for Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (2019); Les Chemins du Sud, MRAC, Sérignan, France (2019); Pattern and Decoration: Ornament as Promise, Ludwig Forum for International Art, Aachen, Germany, traveled to MUMOK, Vienna, Austria and Ludwig Museum, Budapest, Hungary (2018-2019); Pattern, Decoration & Crime, MAMCO, Geneva, Switzerland, traveled to Le Consortium, Dijon, France (2018-2019).
