Darren Waterston is joined by Xavier Salomon, Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator at the Frick Collection, for a discussion about Waterson's new work currently on view in his exhibition Darren Waterston: In the Gloaming.
Xavier F. Salomon is the Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator at the Frick Collection, since 2014. He was born in Rome and grew up between Italy and the United Kingdom. He was educated at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where he received his BA in art history, his MA and PhD. He has worked in a number of museums in the United Kingdom and in the United States, most notably at Dulwich Picture Gallery in London (where he was the Arturo and Holly Melosi Chief Curator) and at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (where he was Curator of Southern Baroque in the Department of European Paintings). He has curated a number of exhibitions, on artists such as Guido Reni, Salvator Rosa, Van Dyck, Goya, Murillo, Canova, and Tiepolo. In 2014 he curated the monographic exhibition on Paolo Veronese at the National Gallery in London. He is currently working on a catalogue raisonné of the drawings of Paolo Veronese, on the catalogue of Spanish paintings at the Frick Collection, and on a monograph on the Venetian painter Rosalba Carriera.
Darren Waterston lives and works in Kinderhook, New York. In 2020, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London opened Darren Waterston's Filthy Lucre: Whistler's Peacock Room Reimagined, a detailed and decadent interpretation of James Abbott McNeill Whistler's famed Peacock Room, a sumptuous 19th-century interior. Filthy Lucre was created by the artist in collaboration with MASS MoCA, North Adams, Massachusetts. His solo exhibition, Uncertain Beauty at MASS MoCA, (2014-2015), ran concurrently with the exhibition that featured Filthy Lucre at Freer/Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. (2015-2017). In 2013, Prestel published a collaboration between the artist and poet Mark Doty, A Swarm, A Flock, a Host: A Compendium of Creatures. Darren Waterston: Filthy Lucre, was published by Skira Rizzoli in association with MASS MoCA and the Freer/Sackler in 2014. Waterston’s paintings are included in numerous permanent collections including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, CA; British Library, London, England; Honolulu Museum of Art, HI; Knoxville Museum of Art, TN; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; New York Public Library, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, CA; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Portland Art Museum, OR; and the Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, WA.
