On December 1, a Zoom webinar brings together Alexi Worth and James Hannaham to discuss Worth's exhibition, Changing Table, currently on view at DC Moore Gallery through December 23.
James Hannaham was born in the Bronx, grew up in Yonkers, New York, and now lives in Brooklyn. He is the author of the novels Delicious Foods, a New York Times and Washington Post Notable Book and winner of the PEN/Faulkner and Hurston/Wright Legacy Awards, and God Says No, an American Library Association Stonewall Book Awards honor book, and has published stories and short works in One Story, Fence, Story Quarterly, BOMB, Ploughshares, and one in Gigantic for which he won a Pushcart Prize. As a conceptual artist, he has exhibited text-based visual art at Asphodel, The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, 490 Atlantic, Kimberly-Klark Gallery, and a one-day pop up at James Cohan. This past summer, his construction Everything Is Fine, Everything Is Fine, Everything Is Normal, Everything Is Normal, a group art show at Main Street Arts in Clifton Springs, NY, garnered Best in Show at Biblio Spectaculum. In the fall of 2021, Soft Skull Press is set to publish his book Pilot Impostor, a series of multigenre responses to poems by Fernando Pessoa. He was a co-founder of the performance group Elevator Repair Service and has written cultural criticism, opinion pieces, celebrity profiles, and more for the Village Voice and additional publications. He is a tenured professor in the Department of Writing at the Pratt Institute.
Alexi Worth is known for paintings that address everyday life, artmaking, and politics in a distinctive visual style that has been called “Realism With Benefits.” Worth’s idiosyncratic naturalism draws from the history of abstraction, cartooning, and photography. Exhibiting primarily in New York since 2001, Worth has received awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Tiffany Foundation, and the New England Foundation for the Arts. In addition to his painting, Worth has written about art for The New Yorker, Artforum, Art in America, and other magazines. He has written catalog texts for artists such as Jasper Johns, Martha Armstrong, Carroll Dunham, Jackie Saccoccio, Jim Nutt, and Philip Pearlstein. Worth has taught at various BFA and MFA programs, including the University of Pennsylvania, the Yale School of Art, and the New York Academy of Art. Born and raised in New York City, he attended Yale University and Boston University. Worth lives in Brooklyn with his wife, the architect Erika Belsey Worth.
