In this public conversation with Professor Peggy Phelan (Director of Stanford Arts Institute, Professor of Theater and Performance Studies, and of English), Joyce Kozloff will show her decorative work (in high art and craft media) from the early 70s to the present. The artist will talk about cultural feminism (the societal role of women's traditional arts and our contemporary relationship to that history), and will discuss the way she has explored sexuality, childhood and motherhood in various projects over the years. She will also address her experiences in the feminist art movement across five decades.
Joyce Kozloff was a co-founder of the Pattern and Decoration movement of the 1970s and was also a founding member of the Heresies collective. Kozloff’s interest in decorative arts, craft, and ornamentation provided an alternative to the minimalist “high art” being produced by men during this period. Her latest cartographic works continue to explore the themes of place, gender and power.
