DC Moore Gallery is pleased to present a series of recent paintings by Darren Waterston in Gallery II.

In his current series of intimate panel paintings Darren Waterston intermingles abstraction and precise detail, effectively merging his fascination with natural science, philosophical beliefs, and landscape. Waterston’s finely wrought compositions, by turns beautiful, unsettling and spare, encourage meditation. Their sleek, skillfully composed surfaces, simultaneously ephemeral and visceral, suggest an overarching interest in the sublime and desire to provoke an intense emotional connection between viewer and canvas.

Waterston’s installation, Filthy Lucre, 2013-14, currently on view at the Smithsonian’s Freer/Sackler Galleries in Washington, DC, is a contemporary re-imagining of James McNeill Whistler’s 1876-77, Harmony in Blue and Gold: The Peacock Room. Unrivaled in its union of painting and architecture, The Peacock Room, a masterpiece of the Aesthetic movement, tells a dramatic story of ego and patronage. For the exhibition at MASS MoCA, Uncertain Beauty, Waterston meticulously recreated the infamous room as a sumptuous ruin. Darren Waterston: Filthy Lucre was published in 2014 by Rizzoli in association with MASS MoCA and the Freer/Sackler. Waterston lives and works in New York City.
